Gives an overall very good introduction to the concept of Taqlid and why it is necessary in Islam. It was a rather concise read and I would've preferred more detail, however I'm glad that I read it... full of logical fallacies and completely glosses over the very political reasons only four madhabs have survived. The Aq 'id of Islam are explicitl y clear, and can be understood by anyone. Examples are the belief in All h, the angels and the Last Day. 2. The ethical rulings of Islam. This refers to matters such as performing good, forbidding evil and cooperation with others. 3. The Fiqh rulings related to Shar 'a. 2 This relates to the worships of Islam, Islamic practices and dealing with others (trade and so on). It is matters of Shar 'a which need the help of the Mujtahid. How does the system work? Owing to our insufficient knowledge in matters of Shar 'a, we do the Taql of one of the main schools of thought. basically means to follow one of the great Im ms and a person who does so is called a Muqallid. This is a valuable work in understanding that the best way to follow the Qur'ān and Sunna for the laymen is by following the great mujtahids and leaving ijtihad in the continuation of developing fiqh to the qualified scholars. Maybe not a final answer, I won't add references, as you may find enough in my relevant posts Taqlid isn't per se something haram, as we are always asked to ask people who have more knowledge than we have by qur'an. Ijtihad is something which is strongly recommended (if not ordered) all the time and no scholar would deny this and all would consider it as needed all the time. There's no clear date when or even if "the doors of Ijtihad have been closed" as it is often stated. This is because we still have ijtihad on a lower level than what is called ijtihad al-mutlaq, an ijtihad which has it's own sources and basic elements such as qur'an, sunnah, ijma'a. qiyas, masalih,... (osol al-fiqh) and not based on a predefined view. Anyone who does not understand or rejects the authority, veracity or relevance of any of the four schools should be given this as apart of their educational process. Abdal Hakim Murad is able to refute the army of reformists and doubters that have spurred within the ummah with the ease of taking a stroll in the park. This short account summaries the position of Sunni Islam leaving no questions asked. Very intense and extremely concise work. A few pages but actual reading and comprehension may take you weeks. Dr. Murad identifies the Madhabs of fiqh as a blessings on Muslims within their extremely turbulent history. Moving away from them will lead of further chaos, he argues. Great book, pretty short, to the point and explains the development of the Four Madhhabs perfectly.
