It is chock-o-block full of Dickens's extraordinary characters, it is clever and funny, and there are exciting adventures, like prison breaks, murders, and a kidnapping. Orphan Pip goes from helping escaped convicts on the moors to keeping Miss Havisham company before being taken up by an unknown benefactor and taught to be a London gentleman. All goes awry before adult Pip can win the heart of his beloved Estella, but he learns important lessons and all comes right in the it turns out, all came more right in the end of the version I read than originally planned by Dickens. He changed the original melancholy ending in subsequent editions and mine used the later, happier ending. Having gone back and compared the two, the original seems more integral to the story. Either way, what a wonderful book. I wish I had read it 25 years ago, like I thought I had. Also posted on Rose City Reader. It's well worth reading though, if only for the images -- the ruined wedding feast, the clerk 'posting' bits of toast through his mail-slot mouth, the family of gravestones by the marshes -- that will stick with you, even if the denouement insists on fading. Great Expectations is one of the Dickens books I never read because I was sure I had read it. I knew all about spooky Miss Havisham in her wedding dress with her moldy, spider-filled wedding cake, so I must have read it, right? No, I must have watched the dreary 1970s movie version somewhere along the line and missed out on the real bad it took so long to get around to this one because Great Expectations is a whale of a good read.
It has been translated into many languages and adapted many times in film and other media. Audiobook running time: 20 hours. Unabridged version - 185, 258 words - 424 pages in the printed edition. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular. Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, is one of the most influential works ever written, and it remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Great Expectations is a graphic book, full of extreme imagery, poverty, prison ships, "the hulks, " barriers and chains, and fights to the death. It therefore combines intrigue and unexpected twists of autobiographical detail in different tones. Regardless of its narrative technique, the novel reflects the events of the time, Dickens's concerns, and the relationship between society and man. Dickens felt Great Expectations was his best work. Great Expectations has a colourful cast that has entered popular culture: the capricious Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Joe the kind and generous blacksmith, the dry and sycophantic Uncle Pumblechook, Mr Jaggers, Wemmick with his dual personality, and the eloquent and wise friend, Herbert Pocket. Throughout the narrative, typical Dickensian themes emerge: wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil. Great Expectations has become very popular and is now taught as a classic in many English classes.

I have a problem with Great Expectations. The problem is, I believe I haven't read it. I have, three or four times, but the very first time, I didn't finish it (we were reading it aloud on a class trip, and the trip ended) and somehow, no matter how often I read it, I think I've never finished it. It's been my secret I'm writing this review to remind me. I have read Great Expectations. The parts of it I cherish are the sidelights: Magwitch, Wemmick and his Aged Parent. Even the Pockets tumbling up. In the introduction to this edition, John Irving mentions that the language shifts when the plot takes off. Perhaps that's why I stop remembering it: the sidelights fade. I've never had too much use for Mr. Pip (as opposed to young Pip, who is rather charming) -- none of his repentance and retrospective self-deprecation was enough for I see the craft in this book, and the rich imagery that makes it so beloved of English teachers, it is not my favorite Boz.
Only I'm not entirely sure that is a good idea. Thy have both changed, with Estella having come down off her high horse and Pip having learnt stability and hard work since they were children. I'm just not convinced the possibly happy ending is justified. I felt, as I often do with Dickens, that he spends 2/3 of the book setting it up and then crams the final third with all the story. It works though, and the pace sits will with the episodic listening. Besides these flaws, it was a wonderful listen. Very well read Christopher Downie I am in the situation that many high schoolers have been put through, as I have to read this for homework, but unfortunately I cant sit and read the book by myself. This audiobook has helped greatly so far, with great clarity and enunciation, gripping changes of tone and accent, and a warm, welcome narrative. I have greatly enjoyed listening to this book so far, and I reckon I will have listened to the full book by Monday (It is Thursday right now) Yet again, thank you for this recording. All around joyful book and listening experience jeremy I find it hard to believe I never read this book as a child and this was my first time doing so. This book captivated me and the narrator read it so well. I will recommend this book to anyone needing a good read. Also, mark Smith was such a charismatic and clear reader that im in search of my next book as we speak.... read by him off course:) Great Expectations Ray/Shane Restaino This reading is a great modern adaptation of this classic book.
Mr. Mark Smith captures the essence of Pip, the innocent youth who matures throughout the book and becomes a much better person despite the obstacles in his path. He gains insight, kindness, a sense of justice, and a social conscience! All the while retaining his American English accent, which will attract American youth! Great job, Mr. Smith! Perfectly voiced Mark does an amazing job reading this book. I listened to it twice back-to-back and loved every moment. I would love for Mark to read The Catcher In The Rye or The Chocolate War or the great Day Bradbury's poetic prose Dandelion Wine and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Even though I found the novel quite long sometimes, I am 2/3 through it now I really appreciate it so far. Great Expectations is Charles Dickens's thirteenth novel. It is his second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person. Great Expectations is a bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age novel, and it is a classic work of Victorian literature. It depicts the growth and personal development of an orphan named Pip. The novel was first published in serial form in Dickens's weekly periodical All the Year Round, from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. Dickens originally intended Great Expectations to be twice as long, but constraints imposed by the management of All the Year Round limited the novel's length. Collected and dense, with a conciseness unusual for Dickens, the novel represents Dickens's peak and maturity as an author. According to G. K. Chesterton, Dickens penned Great Expectations in "the afternoon of his life and fame. " Great Expectations is set among the marshes of Kent and in London in the early to mid-1800s. From the outset, the reader is "treated" by the terrifying encounter between Pip, the protagonist, and the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch.
