Each story draws inspiration from the Holmes stories, but they are not merely rewrites of the Holmes canon. The Pons stories have their own unique charm and a special blend of Holmesian deduction and insight into the socio-political events of the 20th century. Ennesfred Kroll, for example, is not simply a renamed Moriarty - he is Pons' intellectual equal and a key figure in this world's Third Reich. In that respect, he is more like Von Stalhein of "Biggles" than Moriarty, but I doubt very much that Derleth ever read Biggles. In short, this book is perfect for people who want to read the ideal Sherlock Holmes pastiche, but they should not jump to conclusions purely because of the fancy cover and the names of the characters therein.
