Iva Toguri D'Aquino, the American woman popularly known as Tokyo Rose, who was convicted and later cleared of making propaganda radio broadcasts for the Japanese during the second world war, has died, her family said today. She was 90. Although several US citizens were suspected of aiding the Japanese war effort by appearing in broadcasts intended to demoralize US troops, only D'Aquino was convicted in what became one of the most controversial treason cases in US legal history. In 1949, she became only the seventh US citizen to be convicted of treason by an American jury. At her trial, then the most expensive in US history, she was convicted on the single count that she "did speak into a microphone concerning the loss of ships" during wartime broadcasts out of Tokyo designed to weaken the resolve of US troops, according to the US National Archives. D'Aquino, who died of natural causes in Chicago on yesterday, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $10, 000. A model prisoner, she was released three years early in 1956, and successfully fought US government attempts to deport her to Japan.

Treason and Death After the war, journalists interviewed Iva, making 17 pages of notes about her radio work, calling her the one and only "Tokyo Rose. " The Army began to investigate her as a traitor, having committed treason for broadcasting Japanese propaganda. She was imprisoned for one year but was released for lack of evidence. Her story was made national news by Walter Winchell. He called for her to be returned to the U. so she could be tried. In 1948, President Truman felt moved to act, and she was eventually charged with treason. Her passage back to the U. was as a prisoner. On July 5, 1949, Iva's treason trial was officially opened. The actual transcriptions of her broadcasts were never shared with the jury. The jury was divided, but the outcome was that she was found guilty. On September 29, 1949, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison. It's now felt that the "witnesses" were pressured to give their testimony, forced to make her a scapegoat. When Iva was released, she found her family living in Chicago.

There were dozens of other English-speaking women who read propaganda, and at least some of them adopted a more sinister tone. As the war dragged on, American servicemen began referring to the different female voices by a single, infamous nickname: Tokyo Rose. None of the announcers—Toguri included—had ever used the moniker, yet the character became legendary. "Hers was so persuasive a myth that for most Americans she was as famous a Japanese as Emperor Hirohito, " journalist John Leggett later wrote in the New York Times. Toguri performed her "Orphan Ann" character on the "Zero Hour" for roughly a year and a half, but she appeared with less frequency in the lead-up to the Japanese surrender in August 1945. By then, she had married a Portuguese-Japanese man named Filipe D'Aquino and was looking to return home. She remained in dire financial straits, however, so when two American reporters arrived in Japan and offered $2, 000 for an interview with the famous "Tokyo Rose, " she naively stepped forward to recount her story.
